HELPING HANDS IN MATANGAD
As a way of giving back and show our appreciation to the Matangad community, The Rotary Club of Kalayaan Cagayan de Oro together with Rotaract Club of Kalayaan CDO and XUHS Batch ’74 Foundation went to Matangad, Gitagum and held a medical mission, dental check ups c/o NMMC and distributed eyeglasses c/o Cinco Optical Clinic. We concluded the activity with a hearty lunch and gave out gift bags to the identified families. It was a joy to see all their smiles -- truly an early Merry Christmas for the community.
Sharing also updated photos of the area where we planted mangroves last September. Happy to see tiny green leaves start to sprout!!!
To help reduce shoreline erosion and protect communities from coastal flooding, high winds and waves, the Rotary Club of Kalayaan CDO partnered with our friends from XUHS Batch ‘74, Liceo de Cagayan University Alumni Association, Gitagum LGU headed by Mayor Emmanuel Mugot, Brgy Matangad community, 7HS Media Productions, Oro Teatro Bulawanon, RBJ Comtrex, Rotaract of Kalayaan CDO and Philippine Coast Guard to plant 1,000 mangrove propagules last September 11, 2022.
We have identified the coast of Matangad, Gitagum as one of the areas in Misamis Oriental that needs rehabilitating as a lot of the mangroves planted have been washed out by typhoons and heavy rains. We will be revisiting Matangad in 2-3 months to check its progress.
